About G-thamini
G-thamini offers educational and creative programming to the youth of Mukuru. They offer programming at their facilities and within primary and secondary schools. G-thamini Youth Group is registered as a community-based organization (CBO) with the Kenyan government.
G-thamini began as a small, locally driven initiative rooted in the Mukuru community’s need to uplift its youth. Mukuru kwa Njenga, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, has long faced challenges such as limited access to education, high crime rates, and insufficient resources for personal development.
In response, a group of concerned residents, inspired by the potential of local youth, came together to form what is now known as G-thamini. The name “G-thamini” embodies their mission: to value (“thamini”) and empower every young person within the community. Initially focused on providing basic mentorship and education resources, G-thamini has grown significantly over the years, now impacting thousands of young people annually.
Through the dedication of local volunteers and valuable partnerships with organizations, G-thamini has expanded its programs to include various educational, creative, and life skills development initiatives. Programs like Teen Talk, Simba Circle, Sister Circle, and the Mobile Library are carefully designed to address the unique challenges faced by youths of Mukuru, offering a holistic approach to personal growth.
At its core, G-thamini aims to foster self-worth, resilience, and community engagement among Mukuru’s youth. The program continues to evolve by adapting to the needs of the community, whether through adding new programs or increasing outreach efforts. The focus on creating accessible support systems within Mukuru reflects G-thamini’s commitment to sustainable, community-driven change.
Today, G-thamini stands as a testament to the power of grassroots initiatives and local empowerment. By working directly with Mukuru’s young residents, G-thamini promotes a cycle of positive change, encouraging young people to build a brighter future for themselves and their community. Through their vision and continuous support from volunteers and donors, G-thamini remains dedicated to turning Mukuru into a place where every young person can thrive.

G-thamini Legacy
G-thamini was founded in 2008 by a dedicated group of young Mukuru residents who came together with a vision to instil values of self-worth in the youth of their community.
Determined to create opportunities for Mukuru’s youth, they began by sharing books and delivering motivational talks to children. Over the past 15 years, this grassroots initiative has expanded tremendously, growing from an initial reach of 150 students to impacting tens of thousands of young people.
