A resource hub for education and inspiration
Stationery Library
Established in 2019, the Thomas Court Library is the only lending library in Mukuru and a cornerstone of learning at G-Thamini. Today, it proudly serves over 3,000 beneficiaries, offering a safe and enriching environment for learners of all ages.
In March 2024, the library underwent a major transformation, renovated into a state-of-the-art facility that significantly expanded its capacity. Now accommodating up to 120 students, the upgraded space supports online research, independent reading, one-on-one tutoring, and class visits from neighbouring schools. This marks a remarkable improvement from the previous setup, which could hold only 16 students.
To enhance academic support, we launched a structured after-school and holiday tutoring program in 2021, led by our on-staff professor and supported by professional teachers from within Mukuru. Serving more than 120 students daily, the program helps both primary and high school learners excel academically. The results speak for themselves; many participants have achieved top grades, earned scholarships, and progressed to higher levels of education.
Through its programs, the Thomas Court Library helps students strengthen their English and Swahili, develop strong study habits, and discover the joy of reading. It’s more than a library—it’s a gateway to opportunity, growth, and a brighter future for Mukuru’s youth.
Mobile Library
The Thomas Court Mobile Library is a modern-day bookmobile that braves the rough and rugged roads of Mukuru, bringing the joy of reading straight to the hearts of the community. Launched in July of 2022, the van delivers access to quality reading materials during both morning and afternoon sessions, five days a week.
Driven by John Masila, our dedicated literacy road warrior, the retrofitted van travels with two G-thamini team members on board, reaching over 1,000 children across eight schools each week. For many of these children, the joy of selecting a book and bringing it home is a treasured experience—one that fosters pride, curiosity, and a deepening love for learning.
Each week, the team returns to the schools, collecting the previously borrowed books—an exchange marked by an impressive 99% return rate. This consistent engagement reflects the children’s excitement and responsibility in being part of a reading culture.
More than just a vehicle, the Thomas Court Mobile Library is a moving hub of opportunity, igniting imagination, encouraging literacy, and nurturing a lifelong love of books in homes and schools throughout Mukuru.
