Nurturing creativity and talent in Mukuru
Launched in 2015, the G-thamini Youth Group Art Program began as a creative sanctuary for children in Mukuru kwa Njenga. What started as a small initiative has since grown into a vibrant hub of artistic expression.
Meeting Saturdays and twice weekly during school breaks, over 60 students crowd into the limited space to explore their artistic side. Through hands-on instruction, students explore a wide range of techniques, including sketching, painting, printmaking, collage, and mural art.
The program’s impact was nationally recognised when it won the 2023 Mask Prize for Outstanding Art School, a milestone that led to a surge in participation and interest. In 2024, seven of our young artists were shortlisted for the prestigious Art Award—proof of the program’s continued excellence and its ability to elevate young voices through art.
The program’s success is thanks in large part to the guidance of renowned African artist Simon Muriithi. Simon, known internationally for his striking mixed-media works, brings a wealth of experience and inspiration to the program. He has exhibited at the Museum of Kenya, which stands as a testament to the calibre of mentorship our young artists receive.
With the move to a larger space, the program has been able to expand, welcoming more students and offering sessions grouped by age to support tailored learning and collaboration. This new space not only provides room to grow but also cultivates a stronger sense of community and focus among our budding creatives.
