Observed every year on June 16, the Day of the African Child commemorates the courageous students of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, who stood against apartheid-era education policies in South Africa. Their brave protest—and the tragic loss of many young lives—serves as a powerful reminder of the need to protect children’s rights and ensure access to quality education across Africa.
In recognition of this historic day, G-Thamini, in collaboration with partner organisations, hosts annual events to highlight the pressing challenges facing children in Mukuru and neighbouring communities. Through community engagement, advocacy, and education, these events raise awareness and inspire action.
By prioritising the needs of children and defending their rights, we are not only honouring the legacy of those who came before, but also working to build a brighter, more just future for the generations to come.
If you donate to the Day of the African Child, you support by raising awareness about the challenges facing children in Mukuru. Together, we can advocate for their rights, prioritize their needs, and build a brighter future for the next generation.
