Essay Competition

Celebrating young voices through writing excellence

G-thamini Essay Contest is a dynamic initiative designed to spark creativity and critical thinking among students in Mukuru’s local schools. Since its launch in 2021, the contest has rapidly grown into a celebrated platform where young minds are encouraged to explore ideas, reflect on society, and express themselves with confidence.

Open to learners from Grade 6 to high school, the contest is structured into three categories: Grade 6, Junior Secondary School and High School.

Each year, students are challenged with thought-provoking topics such as “The day I will never forget”, “If you were president for a day” and “How cell phones influence human relationships” These engaging prompts encourage participants to think deeply, communicate clearly, and approach complex issues with originality.

In 2023, the contest reached an impressive 1,374 students across 19 schools, a milestone made possible by the enthusiastic involvement of teachers who guide and support the learners throughout the process. Their dedication helps foster a strong culture of writing and academic growth.

To celebrate the outstanding efforts of these young writers, 68 students were recognised with awards from the three forms for their exceptional essays. But the impact goes far beyond prizes—teachers have reported marked improvements in students’ writing skills, critical thinking, and overall academic performance.

By offering a space for creative expression and intellectual exploration, the G-thamini Essay Contest is nurturing the next generation of thinkers, storytellers, and leaders in Mukuru—one essay at a time.
